EDMONTON - Stefan Horlastch visited Edmonton this afternoon to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Holodomor, the 1932-33 famine-genocide imposed by Soviet dictator Josef Stalin, which killed 10 million Ukrainians.

The 87-year-old Holodomor survivor and Toronto resident visited Balwin Elementary and Junior High School and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Alberta Provincial Council to speak about the atrocities he witnessed and experienced as a 12-year-old during the famine.

"There were many sad moments," Horlatsch said, addressing students at Balwin. "I hope I can awaken us about what happened 75 years ago."

Horlatsch spoke of the agony of losing 11 family members during the famine, while eating anything he could find in the woods to survive.

Horlatsch will be travelling across Canada with the International Holodomor Flame to raise awareness, speaking to students along the way. The torch will travel from Canada to 32 other countries, with its last stop in Ukraine.

Many Ukrainians belive the Holodomor, which means "death by hunger", was imposed to quash Ukrainians' attempts for independence from Russian control. In November 2006, the Ukrainian parliament passed a law recognizing the Holodomor as an act of genocide.

There will be a flame ceremony at the legislature grounds on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
